The government has proposed new laws for the NDIS called the ‘Securing the NDIS for Future Generations’ Bill.
These laws don’t secure the future of the NDIS. They end the NDIS as we know it and replace it with a very different system of disability support.
These proposed laws would:
- Remove the foundations of the NDIS: reasonable and necessary supports and individualised planning
- Reduce our choice and control over our supports
- Make it easier for the NDIA to deny the things we need, just by saying they can’t afford them or someone else should provide them (even if they don’t)
- Make it possible for many Disabled people to be removed from the NDIS, even if they still have significant and permanent disability
- Create new powers for the NDIA to investigate and fine Disabled people
LET’S DO SOMETHING!
Government wants to rush these laws through before anyone has a chance to look at what they mean. The law is now being considered by a committee of senators.
They have only been given two weeks to consider it.
We need to flood this committee process with our stories, our pain and our fear about our futures. But more than that, we need to get our networks and supporters to do the same.
HERE’S HOW:
Step One - Get Informed.
You can complete this survey from South West Autism Network and read their summaries of different parts of the Bill. Here is the easy-read version of the same survey.
You can read this discussion paper by Occupational Therapy Society for Invisible Disability.
You can watch this podcast recording with Dr George Taleporos on youtube.
You can come to Villamanta Disability Rights Legal Service Briefings on Wednesday 20 May 2026 from 2pm - 3pm or on Friday 23 May 2026 at 4.00pm
You can check out the slides from our Emergency Community Organising Meeting on Thursday 21 May 2026.
You can read the spin - I mean, official information, on the Health Department Website.
Step Two - Write Your Submission
Write a submission to the Inquiry and send it in.
You can use our template
Here is another, different template that is excellent.
For bonus points - send your submission to your MP.
If you would like help or support making a submission or just want to set aside time to work on it and body-double, Disability Pride Sydney are organising Zoom drop in sessions every day from 12 - 1pm AEST daily from the 21st May to 29th May.
You can also book a session with a law student from Villamanta Disability Right Legal Service to help you with your submission.
Step Three - Map Your Network
Create a list of people in your life who support you. This could be family, friends, your support workers, your professionals, or other people in your life.
If you happen to know people who are politicians, doctors, or run NDIS providers or other organisations - you can also ask them to sign our pledge
Step Four - Organise!
Pick some of the people on your list to approach to make a submission.
1 person - low-spoons legend
3 people - epic achievement
5 + people - powerhouse fueled by existential dread
10 + people - if you get 10+ write to us and we’ll genuinely see about a medal (no promises though, we are very broke and tired)
Contact the people on your list. Explain what is happening to the NDIS.
Explain what it will mean for you. Ask them to make a submission to the inquiry. Explain that the only way government might change their mind is if they see that all kinds of people care about the NDIS and there are so many of us we can’t be ignored.
If they say they can’t do a submission - thank them.
If they say yes - you can send them this website and this Supporter Submission Template.
In a couple of days, contact them again and check that they have made their submission.
Then give yourself a gold star, a little treat or the sweet knowledge that you’ve played your part in ensuring we can’t be ignored.
Remember you’re not in this alone.
We’re all scared - And we’re all together.
We’ll look after each other now, and into the future, whatever that looks like.
